Dave Rowntree on Blur, Britpop & Life Beyond the Drum Kit
On this episode of The MarshyCast, I’m joined by Dave Rowntree, drummer with the legendary Britpop band Blur.
Dave has released a new book featuring photographs from the early days of the band, capturing moments from a time when Blur were finding their sound and identity before becoming one of the defining bands of the 90s.
We talk about those formative years, the explosion of Parklife in the UK, and how the raw energy of Song 2 unexpectedly helped Blur break into the global mainstream.
Dave also reflects on some of his favourite tracks to play live and what it feels like stepping onto a stage as iconic as Wembley.
Beyond Blur, Dave has built a fascinating career composing soundtracks for film and television, and has also spent time working in politics — something that might surprise many fans.
It’s a thoughtful conversation about creativity, longevity and life inside one of Britain’s most influential bands.
