Express FM's Jake Smith takes a closer look at the Championship leaders, Pompey's next opponent.
Off the back of 5 games unbeaten and 3 straight victories without conceding, the Blues are tasked with Premier League-bound Coventry City!
MANAGER
The Sky Blues have former Chelsea and England midfielder Frank Lampard at the helm.
Lampard succeeded the long-serving Mark Robins in November 2024 and has this season, his first full term in charge, guided the club to automatic promotion to the Premier League after a 25-year absence.
To the surprise of few, the now-47-year-old was named as the Championship’s ‘Manager of the Season’ during Sunday night’s EFL Awards ceremony!
ONE TO WATCH
Former Salford City and West Bromwich Albion winger Brandon Thomas-Asante has been chosen as our ‘One To Watch’ on this occasion.
The Ghanaian international is currently Coventry’s second highest scorer this season with 12 Championship strikes to his name so far - 2 of those goals came against Pompey in a 2-1 win for The Sky Blues in this season’s reverse fixture at Fratton Park back in October.
Thomas-Asante, who wears the number 23 shirt, has also claimed 4 assists this campaign.
TOP SCORER
With 16 league goals under his belt at this stage, United States international Haji Wright is Coventry’s top scorer.
The 28-year-old wears the number 11 shirt and is 2nd in the division’s overall top goalscorer chart, behind only Swansea City’s Zan Vipotnik, who has bagged 21.
Despite all of this, Wright has however blanked in each of his last 5 appearances for the club, last scoring in a 2-0 win away at Bristol City on March 7th.
CURRENT FORM
Coventry
are top of the Championship and 10 points clear of Ipswich Town in 2nd.
Having sealed promotion to the top flight as a result of their 1-1 draw at Blackburn Rovers last time out, Frank Lampard’s side can secure the league title with victory over Portsmouth in this match.
The Sky Blues are unbeaten in 5 but, including the aforementioned stalemate at Ewood Park on Friday, have drawn each of their last 3 games.
On the other hand, they have also only suffered 1 defeat in 13.
Will this be the night the Blues mathematically confirm their place in the Championship for next season or will there be title celebrations for the hosts?
Pompey Live with Veezu will have you covered with all of the unmissable action for Express FM LIVE from the Coventry Building Society Arena from 7pm - Jake Smith, Graham Butterworth and Danny Thompson will provide full match coverage with commentary in between courtesy of Andy Moon and Guy Whittingham.
