Portsmouth surrender a first half lead at the MKM Stadium and fall to another Championship defeat.
Despite Terry Devlin giving Pompey the lead early on and then equalising to make it 2-2 on the brink of half-time, ultimately Hull were more clinical in the second 45 when it mattered most.
Joe Gelhardt chipped Josef Bursik with just over ten minutes to go, which made it 3-2, with Pompey left unable to find a way back despite eight minutes of added time.
John Mousinho made one change to the XI that drew 0-0 against Wrexham in midweek.
Jordan Williams came in for the injured Connor Ogilvie, who was taken off in the first half on Wednesday, after a late challenge to his knee by Issa Kaboré.
While 17-year-old academy product Ashton Sizer was handed a spot on the bench in place of John Swift, who was not in the match-day squad.
Hull forward Kyle Joseph had a chance to give Hull the lead just five minutes in, but Blues keeper Josef Bursik made a comfortable save to keep the score goalless.
Despite Hull controlling large parts of the first 15 minutes, Pompey managed to find a breakthrough of their own.
Terry Devlin was left unmarked outside the 18-yard box before he thumped the ball home, which took a heavy deflection, to make it 1-0 and score his first goal of the season.
The hosts were able to find an equaliser just ten minutes later, when Lewie Coyle’s cross into the area was met by Enis Destan, who poked the ball past Bursik to make it 1-1.
Moments before the interval, City managed to take the lead, via Joe Gelhardt’s left-footed corner to the back post that was headed into the net by Joseph to make it 2-1.
However, the Blues managed to go into the break level when Devlin scored again, this time the Northern Ireland international headed in Josh Murphy’s cross off the left flank to make it 2-2, two minutes into added time.
HALF-TIME: Hull 2-2 Pompey
There was one change at half-time, with Mousinho bringing off South African international Luke Le Roux for Marlon Pack ahead of the second 45.
Regan Poole continued to keep his body on line at the back, as the Welsh defender blocked behind Joseph’s run with the ball out for a throw-in.
74 minutes gone and it was a double substitution made by Sergej Jakirović in the Tigers' dugout, with Amir Hadžiahmetović being replaced by Darko Gyabi, and Enis Destan came off for Joel Ndala.
There was no chance for Terry Devlin to achieve a first career hat-trick, with the scorer of both Blues goals being replaced by Zak Swanson with 15 minutes remaining.
Hull restored their lead 79 on the clock, through Leeds United loanee Joe Gelhardt, who beat Ibane Bowat for pace before he dinked the ball over Bursik to make it 3-2.
After the goal, Mousinho made a double change, as Makenzie Kirk and Yang Min-hyeok came on for Connor Chaplin and Ibane Bowat with seven minutes of normal time left.
Fourth official Matthew Corlett indicated an additional eight minutes of added time, once the 90 was up.
Márk Kosznovszky was the 5th and final sub of the afternoon, as the Hungarian midfielder replaced Jordan Williams late on
Kosznovszky fired a corner into the area in the dying seconds of the eighth minute of added time, and the ball eventually found the head of goalkeeper Bursik, but his header went over Ivor Pandur’s crossbar.
