
Midfielder John Swift has signed a 2-year deal at Fratton Park.
The 30-year-old arrives as a free agent after leaving West Bromwich Albion at the end of the 2024/25 season following the expiry of his contract at The Hawthorns - He made 36 Championship appearances for The Baggies last term.
Swift was part of the Portsmouth academy however moved on to join Chelsea's youth setup in 2006 at the age of 11. He graduated in 2014 after being part of the FA Youth Cup winning side and made his 1 and only senior appearance for the club on the final day of the 2013/14 season, replacing Eden Hazard as a second half sub in a 2-1 victory over Cardiff City.
Before signing permanently for Reading in 2016, the midfielder was sent out on loan to Rotherham United, Swindon Town and Brentford.
Having spent 6 years with The Royals and racking up over 200 appearances, Swift signed for West Bromwich Albion in the summer of 2022 on a 3-year contract, which has recently expired, and scored on his debut to salvage a point in a 1-1 draw with Middlesbrough on the opening day of the 2022/23 campaign.
Blues boss John Mousinho told the club media team: "John is a player with bags of Championship experience and is a real leader - both on and off the pitch.
"He possesses all the qualities we were looking for in a midfielder, as the club look to build on what was a positive first campaign back at this level.
"We're delighted to add John to the squad relatively early in pre-season and I'm really looking forward to working with him as we build up to our first competitive fixture next month."
John Swift is also a former England Under-21 international and becomes Portsmouth's second summer signing after the arrival of Adrian Segečić from Sydney FC on June 18th.
