Portsmouth Football Club have today announced the loan signing of defender Aji Alese.

The centre-back has agreed a temporary move to Fratton Park until the end of the season, joining on loan from parent club Sunderland AFC.

Alese, 25, represented England up to Under-20 level and serves as the Blues' 4th January transfer window arrival, following in the footsteps of Millenic Alli, Ebou Adams and Keshi Anderson.

Pompey boss John Mousinho said in an official club statement: “We’re delighted to welcome Aji to the club and want to thank Sunderland for loaning him to us.

“He’s a strong defender who is also comfortable on the ball and has experience of playing Championship football.

“We are short on centre-backs at the moment and he exactly fits the profile of what we have been looking for.”

Alese rose through the ranks of the West Ham United academy and turned professional in 2018 before enjoying loan spells with Accrington Stanley and Cambridge United.

In July 2022, the tall defender joined Sunderland, for whom he would represent 46 times. Last season, Alese helped The Black Cats to promotion to the Premier League via the Play-Offs.
