Lily Rose cranks up the volume with progressive, tech and post-metal. Does It Djent? Most of it will, some of it won’t!
The show title poses a divisive question to the metal music community; many sources and musicians will use the word "djent" to describe a genre... and then other notable people in the scene will also argue that it isn't one. "Djent" is an onomatopoeic term, drawn from the sound of the down-tuned guitars and is characterised by its progressive and technical complexity and polymetric rhythms. Whether it's a genre is up to you...
On the show, you can expect to hear music from most of Progressive Metal sub-genres, including prog, tech, post- and -core metal music... and djent. Big tunes, deep cuts and brand new music.
Gig, festival and release news. Interviews with artists, bands, crew... anyone who makes shows a reality.
About Lily
I'm Lily Rose, marketer, presenter and music lover. I've lived in Pompey for over half my life after falling in love with the city and the community.
The same thing happened with radio; I walked through the door of Express FM over 15 years ago and never looked back. I love being able to play the music I connect with, and connect with my community through the most intimate medium, radio.
Favourite Song - Are you asking me to choose a favourite child?! Can I choose three? I'm going to anyway.
This does change quite frequently, but right now (April 2025), these would be my top 3:
1. Celestial Signals (demo) - Devin Townsend Project. Bit of a deep cut, from the Transcendence Deluxe Edition. This track was re-recorded and included on 2022's 'Lightwork' - Devin Townsend, which is great however, I prefer the arrangement of the demo. Lyrically powerful (as with most of Dev's music), reminding us there is no shame in failure.
2. Deliverance - Opeth. They always play this live and it's record perfect every time; be that a festival or intimate show. All thirteen minutes and thirty-six seconds of it. It takes you on a journey from start to finish. Pure progressive death metal perfection.
3. TesseracT - Concealing Fate Parts 1-3. Is choosing half an EP cheating? They've played them back to back live, and it's one track on PORTALS, so I am choosing it as one track. This very early TesseracT is probably them at their djent-iest. A quiet start... building to something absolutely huge. There's a lot of ebb and flow with this; chugging guitars, blast beats, heavy breakdowns and soaring screams, clearing the way for melodic moments before building right back up again.
Favourite Gig - Another tough one.
Devin Townsend Project at the Royal Albert Hall in 2015 is still up there for the sheer spectacle. However, I feel Devin may have topped it with The Moth at De Oosterpoort, Netherlands ( March 2025). A decade in the making, complete with his own band, symphony orchestra and choir. A legacy event for sure.
Favourite Film - Everyone wants to pick something like The Godfather, Casablanca or Citizen Kane. But my choice is Wayne's World. It's not the most complex, or dripping in allegory; it's silly, funny and makes me laugh. And hurl. Party On!
Favourite Place in Portsmouth - It's always going to be the beach. Specifically, just to the left of South Parade Pier. I can go weeks, almost forgetting it's there. Then I go down, sit on the pebbles and I'm reminded how lucky we are to have this place of beauty and peace right on our doorstep.
Hideout Coffee is a close second. For coffee and donut reasons.
