eXtended Reality to help boost Portsmouth’s visitor and cultural economy

A new project that will use eXtended Reality (XR) technology to help boost Portsmouth’s visitor and cultural economy launches tomorrow (Thursday 10 February).

The Enabling XR Enterprise (eXRe) Project, funded by a £628,000 grant(s) from the government’s £220m UK Community Renewal Fund, offers organisations in the region free access to world-leading advice and technology, showing them how they can incorporate XR in their business.

eXtended Reality – or XR – is a term to describe technologies including virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR).

The eXRe project is led by experts from the University of Portsmouth’s new Centre for Creative and Immersive eXtended Reality (CCIXR), the UK’s first fully-integrated facility to support innovation in the creative and digital technologies of virtual, augmented and extended realities. The project will see the creation of innovative XR projects at each of the six partner organisations (The Mary Rose TrustSpinnaker TowerVictorious FestivalGosport Borough CouncilAspex Visual Arts Trust and The D-Day Story) to increase visitor numbers and to inspire and excite.

Nearly 200 people representing a wide range of public and private sector organisations are expected to attend the launch at The Mary Rose Museum.

Taking place from 6pm, the launch event is aimed at people from broad range of sectors interested in exploring what new technologies can offer.

Attendees will find out how they can benefit from this ground-breaking project, with information on upcoming workshops, access to technology and tailor-made guidance and expertise.
