Versatile former Peterborough United man arrives at Fratton Park on a 3-year-deal.
Knight is able to play centre back or in midfield, just in front of the defence.
The 27-year-old only joined Hannover 96 in June 2024, signing a 2-year deal with the 2. Bundesliga outfit with the club having the option of a further 12 months on top.
He moved to Germany off the back of an impressive 3-year permanent spell in League One with Peterborough United, with whom he racked up 109 competitive appearances. Knight had previously enjoyed 2 separate loan spells with The Posh prior to his 2021 arrival, as well as a season with Wycombe Wanderers in the Championship during the 2020/21 campaign which was played, for the most part, behind closed doors.
Overall, Knight has played 73 times in the Championship before so is no stranger to the division.
Speaking with the club's official media channel, Portsmouth head coach John Mousinho said: "We're delighted to strengthen our defensive ranks with a player we've been tracking for a long time.
"I remember him being absolutely outstanding for Peterborough in the season we won promotion from League One and I felt they were unlucky not to go up with us.
"He was a shining light ans really caught our eye, earning a deserved move to Germany off the back of his performances.
"We're bringing in a player who possesses plenty of experience - including at Championship level - and had a lot of the qualities that we look for in a centre-half."
It is unlikely that the Knight will feature against West Bromwich Albion at The Hawthorns this weekend.
