Portsmouth is one step closer to becoming UK City of Culture 2029 after being named on the longlist alongside nine other cities across the UK.
The bid, led by Portsmouth Creates with the support of Portsmouth City Council and partners from across the city, aims to showcase Portsmouth’s creativity, heritage and ambition on a national stage.
It reflects a long-term vision for our city where culture and creativity are central to everyday life - driving economic growth, boosting skills, improving wellbeing and creating opportunities for everyone.
The Expression of Interest was submitted earlier this year following more than 100 hours of consultation, engaging over 3,000 residents from across Portsmouth.
That strong community backing has helped secure a place on the longlist with the competition set to be narrowed down further this summer.
Cities including Blackpool, Sheffield and Wrexham are also in the running, but Portsmouth’s bid is rooted in collaboration, innovation and putting local voices at its heart - something organisers believe truly sets it apart.
At Express FM, we’re proud to support Portsmouth’s bid. We see every day the depth of local talent, creativity and community spirit that makes Portsmouth unique. Backing this campaign is about celebrating the stories, people and culture that define our city and helping to give them the national platform they deserve.
