Council call to landlords to provide homes for children in need

Portsmouth City Council reach out to landlords and anyone with a spare room in the city, as accommodation is required for young people in need.

Portsmouth City Council's Children and Families directorate are holding an event at the Emirates Spinnaker Tower in Portsmouth on Tuesday 22 October between 7-9pm.

The Children and Families service are hosting the event to build a more flexible and varied accommodation offer for young people in care and those leaving the council's care. This is the start of a campaign to recruit and retain a framework of excellent accommodation providers.

The event is reaching out to specialist accommodation providers and local landlords to come and hear about the new ways Portsmouth City Council can work with them to provide high quality housing for 16-24 year olds in need. The scheme offers private owners a hassle-free experience, with the council's dedicated team of officers managing the tenancy on their behalf.

The council are also reaching out to local residents with a spare room and a desire to create better outcomes for young people. These residents can become supported lodging carers - an invaluable service that the council are keen to recruit more people into. Supported lodging carers provide a safe home, encouragement and support to a young person, helping to develop the skills they need to successfully live independently.

Cllr Rob Wood, Portsmouth City Council's Cabinet Member for Children and Families said "We want to work in new ways with providers to develop high quality homes for our care leavers and the young people in our care. There is an opportunity to do something different - to let out your home hassle free, while helping create better outcomes for young people in Portsmouth. If you're interested in finding out more, please attend our upcoming event."

If you're an accommodation provider, landlord, or are interested in providing supported lodgings, then please attend the event on Tuesday 22 October. Places are limited and people need to register for their place on the Eventbrite page: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/stronger-futures-accommodation-provider-event-registration-73792161341
