The Clarets show exactly why they've only conceded 9 league goals all season as the Blues take a much-needed point at Fratton Park.
John Mousinho’s side jump another spot away from the relegation zone up to 20th place after the Blues fell to 21st following that 1-0 defeat in midweek at the hands of Millwall.
It was a first start since August for Connor Shaughnessy who played more than an hour of football for the first time in almost half a year.
The Irishman was one of 3 changes made from Tuesday night, coming in for Hayden Matthews, along with Rob Atkinson who came back from illness to replace Marlon Pack.
It was also a return to the starting XI for Andre Dozzell who came in for Issac Hayden next to Freddie Potts in midfield.
The action got going quickly, with Portsmouth attacking Burnley early on from the first kick.
Callum Lang had a chance inside just three minutes, but the Pompey top scorer was just unable to hit the target off of Zack Swanson’s in-swinging cross, winning the Blues a corner.
Andre Dozzell was then rewarded a yellow card after he accidentally left a foot in on Brighton and Hove Albion loanee Jeremy Sarmiento just a few moments after.
Around half hour in, Josh Murphy got the better of Welsh International Connor Roberts, but his cross that was meant for Swanson at the back post was saved by Trafford, coming back out to Dozzell who fired one goal wards, but the Burnley shot stopper parried the ball out for a Pompey corner.
Matt Ritchie then missed a golden opportunity just before half-time, but the Pompey skipper for the day had his effort blocked behind for a corner, with the home ends in Fratton Park thinking he had scored.
Half time: Portsmouth 0-0 Burnley
Nicholas Schmid fired a long range ball forward which found the duo of Ogilvie and Murphy down the left flank, but Colby Bishop was just a mere few seconds away from hitting the target to give Pompey the lead just before the hour mark.
Bishop then had another chance to open the scoring, but the Blues number 9 just could not quite finish a scrambled clearance by the Burnley defence after Lang’s earlier effort.
Freddie Potts came off just after the hour mark, with Newcastle United loanee Issac Hayden coming on.
Ritchie’s corner was then met by the man who won Pompey the League one title; Connor Shaughnessy, but the returning defender's header was a simple save for Trafford in the Clarets goal mouth.
Then after getting around seventy minutes in the tank, Shaughnessy was substituted for Matthews with 20 minutes of normal time remaining.
Cohen Bramall was on for his Pompey debut, filling in on the left wing and pushing Josh Murphy to the right for an exhausted Ritchie 3 minutes from time.
Swanson was the other Portsmouth sub, coming off for Terry Devlin.
4 minutes were added on at the end, with then Pompey being handed arguably the best chance of the afternoon with just seconds remaining of the added time.
Bishop had the chance to win it for the Blues and make Fratton Park absolutely erupt, but the Pompey striker's finish was too high for the top right hand corner, with Blues fans having their heads in their hands as to how Bishop did not win it in the dying seconds of the game.
Full-time: Portsmouth 0-0 Burnley
Next up: it’s one of only five championship fixtures on FA Cup weekend for John Mousinho’s side next Saturday, as the Blues travel to Yorkshire to visit Sheffield United.
It will be a visit to Bramall Lane that is 13 years in the making, with Pompey's last visit being back in 2012, which was a 1-0 defeat.
Portsmouth are still eyeing up some points away from home, but it will be an extremely hard task as they face yet another Premier League chasing side.
