It was a night of heightened emotions at the CBS Arena, where Coventry sealed the league title in emphatic style while the Blues celebrated Championship survival, despite being thumped.
Pompey's 5-match unbeaten run comes to an end at the hands of the newly-crowned champions; however Oxford United’s defeat to Wrexham at the Kassam Stadium ensured the retention of Portsmouth’s Championship status for 2026/27.
Despite Adrian Segečić's consolation at 3-0, a first half header from Haji Wright, a brace from Ephron Mason-Clark, an own-goal by Regan Poole, and a fifth from Kaine Kesler-Hayden earned Coventry a comfortable victory at the CBS Arena.
The defeat was Portsmouth's first since that horrible 6-1 loss away at Queen’s Park Rangers before the international break.
But despite defeat, John Mousinho’s side are officially mathematically safe, and will play second-tier football next season, due to results around them.
Wrexham defeated 22nd-place Oxford United 1-0 at the Kassam Stadium, while Hull City earned a point in a 2-2 draw at 23rd-place Leicester City at the King Power Stadium, with the Foxes officially being relegated to League One.
There were 3 changes to the XI that defeated Leicester City 1-0 at Fratton Park this past Saturday.
In came the previously suspended Connor Ogilvie for Terry Devlin, as well as Ebou Adams for Marlon Pack, and Adrian Segečić for the also absent Keshi Anderson.
Frank Lampard’s side started off fast and took the lead inside just 12 minutes through the United States International - Wright.
The second top-scorer in the Championship headed home Jack Rudoni’s left-footed corner on the right-hand side out of the hands of Nicolas Schmid and into the back of the net to make it 1-0.
City did have chances to double their lead, but Pompey stood their ground and held on until the half-time whistle.
HALF-TIME: Coventry City 1-0 Portsmouth
Mousinho made one change at the interval, with Madiodio Dia coming off for Conor Shaughnessy ahead of the second 45.
It took just a minute into the second half for the Sky Blues to double their lead, and they did so via Mason-Clark.
The City winger took advantage of Schmid’s mistake from Poole’s back pass, before the former Barnet and Peterborough winger simply had to tap the ball in to make it 2-0.
Pompey’s horror start to the second-half continued, when the Championship champions then made it three in 50 minutes in more unfortunate circumstances for Poole.
Dutch wing-back Milan Van Ewijk pinged a ball into the 18-yard box, which deflected off the foot of Poole as it rolled into the goal to make it 3-0.
Just past the hour-mark, Portsmouth made a double change, as Luke Le Roux replaced Adams in midfield, while Millenic Alli came off for Josh Murphy, who made his first appearance in a Blues shirt since the 20th December.
With just over 20 minutes on the clock, Segečić pulled a goal back for the Blues as he scored his seventh of the campaign.
The Croatian Under-21 picked up Jack Rudoni’s misplaced pass, before bursting forward to smash a low left-footed shot into the bottom corner to make it 3-1.
However, Lampard’s side switched back onto being relentless, as Mason-Clark grabbed his second of the night, when he finished off Victor Torp’s through ball at Schmid’s near post to make it four.
Coventry ended the game inside the additional five minutes of added time with a fifth of the night through sub Kesler-Hayden, who sliced home Rudoni's ball to the back post to make it 5-1.
