Express FM has announced full coverage of this weekend’s South Coast Derby as Portsmouth take on Southampton in the Championship on Sunday - the first league meeting between the two rivals since April 2012.
The South Coast Derby is widely regarded as one of English football’s fiercest rivalries, with passion and pride on the line both on and off the pitch.
The weekend of programming begins tomorrow (Friday) with a special two-hour edition of The Football Hour presented by Jake Smith. Alongside the usual mix of panel debate, the show will feature exclusive interviews with Colin Farmery (Pompey historian), Gareth Evans (who played in the 2019 South Coast Derby), and David Norris (goalscorer of the dramatic equaliser at St Mary’s in the last league clash back in 2012), as excitement builds for Sunday’s showdown.
On matchday itself, Dave Joyce and Malcolm Drew will host a live pre-match party from 10am, filled with music, chat, and all things Pompey to get fans in the mood. From 11am, Jake Smith, Charlie Sinclair, and James Wilson will be broadcasting live from St Mary’s Stadium with full pre-match build-up, live commentary, and post-match analysis until 3pm.
Jake Smith, presenter of Pompey Live and The Football Hour, said: "There’s a big thrill and it’s a huge honour to be part of the Pompey Live team on any matchday but I’m really proud to embark on what is going to be a busy weekend on Express FM, which’ll hopefully be rewarded with 3 delicious points!"
Harrison RB, Content Manager at Express FM, added: "This is more than just a football match - it’s a cultural event for Portsmouth. The South Coast Derby is steeped in history and emotion, and for many supporters who can’t make it to St Mary’s, Express FM is their way of being part of the occasion.
"That’s why we’re pulling out all the stops to make this coverage extra special - it’s about giving fans a sense of belonging and celebrating the pride of our city together."
The South Coast Derby has produced some unforgettable Pompey memories over the years. Portsmouth have twice been crowned Champions of England (1949 and 1950) - more top-flight titles than any other South Coast club.
The club’s famous FA Cup triumph in 2008 also delivered their first ever taste of European football, further cementing Fratton Park’s proud legacy.
