Christian Saydee Completes Wigan Switch

League One title-winning forward leaves Pompey to sign for League One promotion hopefuls Wigan Athletic.

The attacker joined the Blues on the 14th of June, 2023 for an undisclosed fee from AFC Bournemouth having had a trial with Portsmouth the previous summer when the team was led by Danny Cowley, who opted not to sign him.

It has been widely reported that Wigan were up against Plymouth Argyle in the race to sign Saydee, who has put pen-to-paper on a 3-year deal with The Latics.

Boss Ryan Lowe said in an official club statement: "It's brilliant that Christian has decided to join us and commit to the project here at Wigan Athletic, becoming one of the first forward players through the door.

"It is clear that we need more in the attacking area of the field. I've always said we need players who know how to score, and we will coach them to get into the right positions - and we will certainly do that with Christian because he wants to learn and his character and profile are excellent.

"He will fit really well into what we're looking to build here."

Lowe has only been in charge of Wigan since March of this year, succeeding Shaun Maloney at the helm to steer the side to 15th in the third tier. Bookmakers believe The Latics could compete for a Play-Off place in 2025/26 and Saydee's arrival further strengthens those odds.

Meanwhile, Pompey head coach John Mousinho said: "Christian was a popular member of our squad and I know he'll be missed by staff, players and supporters alike.

"He's made some important contributions during the past 2 seasons and was someone we loved having at Fratton Park.

"But he hopefully now has the chance to get some more regular minutes and we didn't want to stand in the way of that.

"We thank him for everything he did in a Pompey shirt and wish him nothing but the best for the next stage of his career."

Saydee scored a total of 7 goals in 73 appearances for Portsmouth, including a double in the 2-2 draw with Middlesbrough at the Riverside Stadium last August and a memorable strike against Oxford United at Fratton Park a few months prior in the run-in to securing promotion to the Championship from League One.
