With Giant released in cinemas today, I sat down with director Rowan Athale to talk about bringing the story of boxing icon Prince Naseem Hamed to the big screen.
Rowan explains how the project first came his way, why the casting was so crucial to getting the story right, and why he felt it was important not to gloss over tougher themes, including racism and identity.
We also discuss Prince Naseem Hamed’s involvement with the film, how he reacted to seeing his story told on screen, and the responsibility that comes with portraying such a larger-than-life figure.
A thoughtful, honest conversation about filmmaking, sport, and telling stories the right way.
