Councillor calls for railway station to be cleaned

They've written to South Western Railways and Network Rail to ask them to tidy up the outside of Portsmouth and Southsea railway station.

"The appalling visual state of this structure is increasingly detrimental to the immediate area and the city centre as a whole," Cllr Ben Dowling, Portsmouth City Council's cabinet member for Planning, Regeneration and Economic Development, wrote as he asked the organisations to get back to him with their plans to fix the problem.

Cllr Dowling added: "This is now particularly stark as the immediate area's public realm is having significant investment from the council and developers."

The full letter, with reference to the attached photograph, is below:

"I'm writing to implore your organisations to give Portsmouth and Southsea station some much-needed attention. It is a primary entrance point for visitors to the city and the attached photograph is the first thing they see as they exit the station.

"The appalling visual state of this structure is increasingly detrimental to the immediate area and the city centre as a whole. This is now particularly stark as the immediate area's public realm is having significant investment from the council and developers.

"Please, can you get back to me with what your organisations will do to get this fixed so that we can do everything possible to make one of Portsmouth's gateway entrances fit for purpose."
