City to pay tribute to bravery of Ukranians

Residents are invited to join a tribute to the bravery of Ukranians in Guildhall Square on Friday 24th February.

Portsmouth will join the nation this Friday in a tribute to highlight the UK’s solidarity with Ukraine. At 11am, the council will hold a minute’s silence to mark the one-year anniversary of Russia’s invasion.

The event in Guildhall Square is open to all members of the public, and attendees are asked to arrive by 10:50am. The service will begin with the raising of the flags, followed by a one minute silence at 11am.

Messages will follow from both the Lord Mayor of Portsmouth Cllr Hugh Mason, and Leader of Portsmouth City Council Cllr Gerald Vernon-Jackson.

Councillor Hugh Mason, Lord Mayor of Portsmouth, said: "The first anniversary of the Russian invasion of Ukraine will be a poignant moment for the city and especially for those who have been directly affected.  It's a chance to pause and express our hope for a just and peaceful outcome."
