Wednesday, May 16th

Event Summary

A public lecture by Richard Dyer, Professor of Film Studies, Kings College London.

La Dolce Vita is a film about celebrity made in 1960 just as celebrity culture was becoming a cultural dominant of our times. It anatomises the categories of people who become celebrities and displays the manufacture of celebrity. Above all, in its strategies of casting and its aesthetic exuberance, it plays on the ambiguities of celebrity, notably whether this is an inherent quality or a media construction and whether it is something to be despised or celebrated.
